Belleville Saloon Museum

21 Mar

According to Riverfront Times, a group in Belleville is planning to create a Belleville Saloon Museum. The proposed museum will honor Belleville’s saloon heritage and Stag beer.

As local experts in museums and public history, do you have any ideas for the proposed museum?

I know this bar. I have been in there a few times. It was Garfields for the longest time then has changed owership and names a few times in the past year. I hear the latest reason it closed down had to do with issues with the liquor license. I will say that there are quite a few bars in Belleville. You can’t drive too far without seeing one. Another is reopening down the road from where I live in Belleville called the Silver Creek Saloon. I think the idea of a museum is kinds cool. It’s not only local history, but a topic with which most people can identify. And Stag is very popular in Belleville and the surrounding area. A few years back, when the teamsters who delivered Budweiser went on strike, the local bars stopped buying the beer. So the patrons started to ask for Stagweiser and it kinda stuck. But as the signs in Belleville say “Stag is not for beginners.” I can’t wait to see this when it opens.
